Things To Consider Before Installing Work Platforms

When it comes to work platforms, there are many different types. Some of these include the following:

  • Permanently installed platforms
  • Scaffolding
  • Scissor lifts and other aerial work platforms

The duration of the work that will take place, the type of work you’re doing, and other factors will determine which platform you choose. For example, installing work platforms for a fast paint job could include scaffolding. A scissor lift, on the other hand, might be used throughout a warehouse for a light bulb replacement project.

If workers need to work at heights for lengthy periods or need indefinite access to elevated work, customizable, permanently installed work platforms are probably best. With these platforms, workers can have easy, safe access. For the task at hand, they also have ergonomic positioning.

Requirements for Work Platforms

There are a handful of requirements that generally hold true where work platforms are concerned:

  • Precise fall protection requirements are assigned to each type of lift or scaffolding. Before using scaffolding, this should be checked or accessed.
  • A 4-inch toe board, mid rail, and 42 high inch rail are required.
  • Steps must have rails if more than three steps are needed to access the platform.
  • Access openings must be offset or protected by glass so someone can’t step directly into them.

That will get you going, but it’s just the basics.

Different Uses for Different Platforms

With a specific purpose in mind, platforms are usually customized or designed. So, to allow a machine operator to work with the controls at the proper height, you may have to install a platform that does away with the need to reach overhead.

For maintenance purposes, higher sections of the same machine may need to be accessed as well. One platform is not, however, suited for every purpose just because it’s already in place. For operating equipment, the platform might be at the perfect height. However, you may have to perform unsafe actions – like climbing a rail – in order to access higher areas. For the precise purpose for which it was designed, always make sure platforms are used correctly.

What Kind of Surface Are You Working On?

Let’s look at two scenarios:

  • You’re working on a nonadjustable, fixed platform. What surface considerations are there? You simply need to see to it that the work surface is not compromised or broken, and is clean, and free of spills or debris.
  • You’re on a platform that can be moved. Now, the surface below your work platform needs to be considered.

To account for uneven surfaces, some platforms can be adjusted. So they can be rolled over holes in the floor – such as a grating – large wheels are provided on some work platforms.

However, floor openings or uneven surfaces can be disastrous without safeguards. Hence, make sure that your work platform is fully equipped with whatever you need to keep it stable and level.
